Words to Pages Calculator
Estimate page count from word count, font size, spacing, margins, and words-per-page assumptions.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Words to Pages Calculator
How many words is one page?
It depends on font, size, and spacing. The common standard is 500 words on a single-spaced page or 250 words on a double-spaced page in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins on US Letter paper. This calculator starts from that figure and adjusts it for your chosen font, point size, and line spacing.
How does the calculator estimate page count?
It computes words per page as a base figure times a size factor times a spacing factor, then divides your word count by that. The base is the words a single-spaced 12pt page holds for your font (500 for Times New Roman, 470 for Arial, 290 for Courier New, and so on). The size factor is (12 / your point size) squared, and the spacing factor is 1.0 for single, 0.6667 for 1.5 lines, and 0.5 for double.
Why does font size change the page count so much?
Glyph area grows with the square of the point size, so the number of words a page holds scales with the inverse square. Going from 12pt to 10pt fits about 1.44 times as many words per page, while 14pt fits only about 0.73 times as many. That is why the calculator squares the 12 / size ratio rather than scaling it directly.
Why do different fonts give different page counts?
Each font has a different average character width, so a wider font fits fewer words on the same page. Times New Roman is compact at about 500 words per single-spaced page, Arial fits about 470, and Courier New, a fixed-width font, fits only about 290. Pick the font that matches your assignment to get the closest estimate.
How accurate is the page estimate?
Treat it as a close estimate, not an exact count. Real page counts shift with margins, paragraph spacing, headings, block quotes, tables, and how full the last page runs. The model assumes US Letter pages with 1-inch margins and standard formatting, which matches most school and college essay requirements.
Can I convert pages back to words?
Yes. Switch the direction to pages to words, enter a target page count, and the calculator multiplies it by the words per page for your font, size, and spacing. For example, a 5-page double-spaced 12pt Times New Roman paper works out to about 1,250 words.
