Frequently Asked Questions about the Weighted GPA Calculator

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses a fixed 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes: typically +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB. An A in AP Calculus counts as 5.0 on the weighted scale but 4.0 on the unweighted.
How do colleges use weighted GPA?
It varies. Many recalculate to their own scale anyway. Selective colleges look at unweighted GPA plus course rigor (number of AP/IB/Honors taken). State universities often use the school's reported weighted GPA. Always check the schools you are applying to.
What boost do AP and IB classes get?
Most US high schools use +1.0 for AP and IB, +0.5 for Honors. Some use +0.5 for AP and 0 for Honors. Some boost only based on the final grade (no D or F gets a boost). The calculator lets you set the boost per course type.
How do credit hours factor in?
GPA is credit-hour weighted. A 4-credit AP class with an A counts more toward GPA than a 1-credit elective with an A. The calculator multiplies each course's grade points by its credits, sums, and divides by total credits.
Is a higher weighted GPA always better?
Not necessarily. A 4.5 weighted earned mostly through APs is more impressive than a 4.0 weighted earned through grade inflation in regular classes. Course rigor matters as much as the final number. The calculator shows both weighted and unweighted so you have both perspectives.
