How does this grade calculator work?
Enter each assignment's score, the maximum possible points, and its weight. The calculator converts each score to a percentage, multiplies by its weight, sums those products, and divides by the total weight entered. The result is your weighted percent, rounded to two decimal places, along with the matching letter grade and 4.0-scale GPA equivalent.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted grades?
Unweighted grading treats every assignment equally regardless of size. Weighted grading multiplies each assignment's percentage by its share of the course, so a final exam worth 40% of your grade pulls harder on the result than a quiz worth 5%. This calculator always uses the weighted method.
How are letter grades assigned on the US scale?
The calculator uses the standard plus/minus cutoffs: A+ is 97% and above, A is 93-96%, A- is 90-92%, B+ is 87-89%, B is 83-86%, B- is 80-82%, C+ is 77-79%, C is 73-76%, C- is 70-72%, D+ is 67-69%, D is 63-66%, D- is 60-62%, and below 60% is an F. Individual schools may use slightly different breakpoints.
What is curve grading and how does it affect my result?
Curve grading adjusts scores after the fact so that a target share of students reaches each letter grade, for example shifting all raw scores up by 5 points. This calculator computes your grade from the numbers you enter, with no curve applied. If your instructor curves grades, use the adjusted scores when entering your data.
Do my weights need to add up to 100?
No. The calculator divides the weighted sum by the total of all weights you entered, so only the ratio matters. Weights of 10, 20, and 30 give the same result as 20, 40, and 60. Use whatever numbers appear on your syllabus.
