Frequently Asked Questions about the Final Grade Calculator
How do I figure out the score I need on my final?
Enter your current course grade, the grade you want overall, and the final's weight. The calculator solves for the minimum percentage you need on the final to hit your target.
What does the final's weight mean?
It is the share of your overall grade that the final exam represents. A 30% weight means the final counts for 30% of your course grade and your prior work counts for the remaining 70%.
What if the required score is over 100%?
Your target grade is no longer mathematically reachable from your current standing. Either lower your target, ask about extra credit, or check whether your current grade already includes all assignments.
How does this map to letter grades on the US 4.0 scale?
An A is usually 93% or higher (4.0), B is 83% (3.0), C is 73% (2.0), D is 63% (1.0). Set your desired percentage to match the letter grade and GPA you want.
Does this work for weighted or curved classes?
It works for any class that combines a final exam with prior work using fixed weights. For curved grading, use your current letter target as a guide since the cutoffs may shift after the curve is applied.
