What scale does this GPA calculator use?
This calculator uses the standard US 4.0 scale with plus/minus grades. A+ and A both equal 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, on down to D- at 0.7 and F at 0. Most American high schools and colleges use this same scale.
How is GPA calculated?
Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours. Those products are summed, then divided by the total credit hours. For example, a 3-credit A (4.0) and a 4-credit B (3.0) gives (12.0 + 12.0) / 7 = 3.43. The result is rounded to two decimal places.
What is a good GPA?
A 3.0 meets the minimum threshold for most scholarships and graduate programs. Above 3.5 is generally competitive for selective graduate schools and honors programs. A 3.7 or higher puts you near the top of most applicant pools.
What if my school uses a 5.0 or 100-point scale?
This calculator is built for the standard unweighted 4.0 letter-grade scale only. It cannot accept raw point values or a 5.0 weighted scale directly. Check whether your school also reports an unweighted GPA, or convert your letter grades manually using the 4.0 equivalents shown in the calculator.
Should I include pass/fail courses?
No. Pass/fail courses do not generate grade points and do not count toward GPA at most institutions. Enter only courses that received a letter grade.
Does GPA include withdrawn or audited classes?
No. A withdrawal (W) and an audited course carry no grade points and do not affect GPA. Only courses completed with a letter grade count.
