Frequently Asked Questions about the Hours Calculator (Time Card)
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid breaks. The calculator does this automatically and supports shifts that cross midnight.
What is decimal hours?
Total hours expressed as a decimal: 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 decimal hours. Payroll systems usually want decimal hours.
How does it handle overnight shifts?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours.
Do I include breaks in my work hours?
Most US employers do not pay for unpaid breaks (lunch, etc.). Subtract them from total worked time. Enter the unpaid break duration in minutes.
How do I convert hours to a paycheck amount?
Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate. For 8.5 hours at $20/hour: 8.5 x 20 = $170.
