Frequently Asked Questions about the Deadline Calculator

How is a working day defined here?
A working day is any day in your chosen work week (Mon-Fri, Mon-Sat, or every day) that is not a US federal holiday when the holiday option is on. The default is Mon-Fri with holidays excluded. The deadline day counts as the last working day; today does not. This is a planning convention, not legal advice. Court rules, statutes, contracts, and jurisdictions may count days or holidays differently.
How does the urgency band work?
The urgency label is driven by working days, not calendar days, because that is what determines how many real work sessions you have left. Under 3 working days is Imminent (red), 3 to 5 is This Week (orange), 6 to 10 is Next Week (amber), 11 to 30 is Comfortable (green), and over 30 is Distant (blue). The bands map to typical sprint and stand-up planning windows.
Which US federal holidays are excluded?
The built-in calendar excludes 10 holiday entries before 2021 and 11 from 2021 onward, when Juneteenth was added. It is not a complete historical holiday calendar. Fixed-date holidays use the observed date, while state, religious, and company-specific holidays are not built in.
What happens when the deadline is in the past?
The calculator flips into 'past deadline' mode and shows how many calendar days you are overdue as a negative count. Working days are not recomputed in the past because the urgency information you need is already captured: the deadline has shipped, every working day after it counts the same.
How is this different from a days-until or weeks-between calculator?
A days-until calculator counts calendar days, including weekends, and ignores holidays. A weeks-between calculator returns a decimal week count and stops there. This deadline calculator does both, plus it walks your chosen work week day-by-day, applies the US federal holiday calendar, and converts the result into an urgency band you can act on. Pick this one when you care about the working days you actually have, not the wall-clock days between two dates.
