What counts as a business day?
A business day is any Monday through Friday that is not a US federal holiday (when you turn the holiday option on). Saturdays and Sundays are always excluded from the count.
Which US federal holidays are recognized?
All 11 federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Floating holidays like MLK Day and Thanksgiving always fall on a weekday, so no shift is needed. Fixed-date holidays like July 4th use the official observed date.
How are observed holiday dates handled?
Fixed-date holidays that fall on a Saturday are observed the prior Friday; those that fall on a Sunday are observed the following Monday. This matches the federal payroll convention. Floating holidays such as Memorial Day and Labor Day are always scheduled on a Monday, so they never need an observance shift.
Are state holidays or company holidays included?
No. Only the 11 federal holidays are built in. If your workplace observes Good Friday, Black Friday, or a state-specific holiday, subtract those days from the result manually.
Does the end date count as a business day?
No. The calculator uses an exclusive end date. A range from Monday to Friday of the same week counts as 4 business days, not 5. This matches how most project deadlines and contract terms are measured, where the end date is the target rather than a working day.
