Frequently Asked Questions about the Time Zone Converter
How does the converter handle daylight saving time?
Each conversion uses the actual time zone offset on the date you enter, not a fixed offset. So a New York to London conversion in January uses EST and GMT, while a July conversion uses EDT and BST automatically.
What happens during the spring-forward DST gap?
If you pick a wall-clock time that does not exist (such as 2:30 AM on the US spring-forward Sunday), the converter resolves it to the nearest valid instant using the post-transition offset.
Why does the hours difference between cities change over the year?
DST does not start and end on the same day in every region. For a few weeks each year, the gap between New York and London is 4 hours instead of 5, and similar shifts happen for most US-Europe pairs.
Which time zones are supported?
Fifteen common business zones are listed, covering all US time zones, major European and Asian hubs, Dubai, Sydney, and UTC. All conversions use the IANA time zone database built into your browser.
Do the offsets shown account for the date I picked?
Yes. The labels like GMT-5 or GMT+1 reflect the offset on the date and time you entered, not a generic offset. This is why the same city can show different offsets for a winter date and a summer date.
