The US 4.0 scale anchors A at 4.0, B at 3.0, C at 2.0, D at 1.0, and F at 0. Plus and minus grades shift by 0.3 or 0.4 in each direction, so A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B- is 2.7, and so on. Almost every US high school and college transcript reports an unweighted GPA on this scale, which is why most college admissions calculations start from here.

High schools add a bonus to harder courses. Honors classes usually add 0.5 and AP or IB classes add 1.0 to each course's grade points, so an A in AP Calculus counts as 5.0 instead of 4.0. The maximum is 5.0 (or sometimes 4.5 at schools that only bonus AP). This calculator treats anything above 4.0 as weighted course work and subtracts the 1.0 bonus when converting to the standard 4.0 base.

Most Indian universities, including those following the CBSE and many engineering programs, report a Cumulative Grade Point Average on a 10-point scale. The widely-used conversion to percentage multiplies CGPA by 9.5, so a CGPA of 8.0 maps to 76% and a CGPA of 9.0 maps to 85.5%. This calculator uses the same 9.5 multiplier when you pick the 10-point scale.

World Education Services (WES) and most US graduate-admissions offices convert Indian percentages to the US 4.0 scale band-by-band rather than with a single formula. Roughly, a percentage at or above 60% maps to a US 4.0 (first division), 55-59% maps to about 3.3, 50-54% to about 2.7, and below 50% to 2.0 or lower. The calculator surfaces both the percentage and the letter grade so you can compare against your target program's published cutoffs.

GPA-to-percentage conversion is inherently lossy. A 4.0 GPA can correspond to anything from 93% to 100%, because the standard scale collapses every score in the A band into the same number. Going the other way, the calculator picks the band's anchor point, so the percentage shown is a representative value, not a precise grade. For applications that require an exact percentage, ask your school's registrar for the official transcript number.
