What counts as leisurely, moderate, brisk, and power-walking?
The CDC breaks walking intensity by speed. Leisurely sits under 2.5 mph (a slow stroll). Moderate is 2.5 to 3.5 mph, the pace most adults default to and the lower bound the CDC uses for its 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity recommendation. Brisk is 3.5 to 4.5 mph, fast enough that you can still talk but not sing. Power-walking starts above 4.5 mph and demands deliberate arm drive and a longer stride to sustain. The calculator picks the category from your computed speed, so you can see whether the walk you planned actually clears the brisk threshold or only the moderate one.
Is the 10,000 steps a day target science or marketing?
Marketing. The number traces to a 1965 Japanese pedometer named Manpo-kei (literally 10,000-step meter), sold by Yamasa Tokei Keiki around the time of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The character for 10,000 even looks like a person walking, which made it a tidy ad hook. The WHO and CDC never set 10,000 steps as a guideline. They recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity. Modern research (I-Min Lee, JAMA Internal Medicine 2019; Paluch et al., Lancet Public Health 2022) finds mortality benefits flatten somewhere between 7,000 and 8,000 steps per day for adults under 60 and around 6,000 to 8,000 for older adults. Treat 10,000 as a useful round target, not a magic threshold.
How accurate is MET-based calorie burn for walking?
Within roughly 10 to 20 percent for the average adult. The MET formula (kcal = MET x weight_kg x hours) treats every walker at a given intensity as burning the same multiple of resting metabolism, but real burn varies with fitness, terrain, wind, walking economy, and lean body mass. Lab studies (Byrne et al., 2005) found compendium METs overestimate measured oxygen cost by 10 to 15 percent for sedentary adults and underestimate it slightly for fit ones. The bigger issue for walking is incline and load: a 5 percent grade adds about 50 percent to the calorie burn at the same speed. Treat the number as a sensible planning estimate, not a precise readout.
Walking vs running for fat loss: which actually wins?
Per minute, running burns about 2 to 2.5 times more calories than walking at the same body weight. Per program, the long-term outcomes are closer than the headline suggests, because walkers stick with the habit longer. The Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study and a 2013 NIH analysis of the National Runners' and Walkers' Health Study found similar reductions in BMI, blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome risk for matched energy expenditure, with walkers showing much lower musculoskeletal injury rates (roughly one-third the running rate). For most adults the better question is not running vs walking but which routine you will still be doing in 18 months.
Why does the stride estimate use 0.413 of height?
Because that ratio holds across the adult population. Anthropometric studies (Hreljac and Marshall, 2000; later replications by ACSM) found walking stride length sits at roughly 0.413 to 0.415 of standing height across sex and fitness levels. A 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) walker hits roughly 26 in (67 cm) per step, a 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) walker about 31 in (78 cm). The taller walker takes about 17 percent fewer steps for the same distance, which is why two friends on the same trail can disagree wildly on their step counts. Without a height the calculator falls back to the CDC adult average of about 2.2 ft per step (~67 cm).
