What counts as a valid push-up for the ACSM 1-minute test?
Start in a plank with arms fully extended, hands directly under the shoulders, and the body in a straight line from the head through the heels (or knees, for the modified version). Lower the body until the chest is within a fist's height of the floor while keeping the back flat. Push back up until the arms are at full extension, with no sag in the hips or pike at the waist. A rep only counts if the chest descends low enough and the arms lock out at the top. The ACSM and CSEP protocols both allow brief pauses but the clock keeps running, so you have a single 60-second window to score as many clean reps as you can.
Why is the test timed at 1 minute instead of going to failure?
Because the norms were built that way. ACSM's table comes from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, which standardized on a 1-minute window so the test scored both strength endurance and pace control rather than pure maximal output. A go-to-failure test ends up rewarding people who can grind out slow reps in the last 30 seconds and punishes anyone who burns out fast. The 60-second cap gives a clean apples-to-apples comparison and keeps the test short enough to slot into a routine fitness assessment.
Why do women's norms use the modified (knee) push-up?
It is a research convention, not a statement about strength. When the CSEP norms were collected in the 1980s and 1990s the modified push-up was the standard female protocol because it produced a wider, more usable spread of scores across the general population. Women generally carry a higher percentage of body weight in the lower body, so the standard push-up moves a smaller fraction of total mass relative to upper-body strength than it does for men, and many women in untrained samples could not record a meaningful score. ACSM still publishes the modified table as the default and offers no separate female-standard column. How do I improve my push-up count?
Progressive overload, run three times a week. The cheapest plan: 5 sets of 5 high-quality reps with 90 seconds rest, three days a week, adding 1 rep per set when all five sets are clean. Once you hit 5x10 bodyweight, add a weighted vest (start at 10 percent of bodyweight) and reset to 5x5. Layer in tempo work (3-second descent, 1-second pause at the bottom) on a fourth day to build the eccentric strength most people lack. A typical untrained adult who follows that template adds 8 to 15 reps to their 1-minute score in 8 weeks. The biggest mistake is grinding sloppy reps to chase a number instead of treating push-ups as a strength lift.
