Why use the same 1RM formulas as the deadlift but expect a different number?
The math is identical (Epley, Brzycki, Lombardi, and O'Conner were fit on multi-lift powerlifting data, not on a single exercise) but the strength bar a typical lifter clears on bench is much lower than on deadlift. The bench press recruits a smaller muscle mass (pecs, anterior deltoid, triceps) compared with the posterior chain plus quads plus traps the deadlift loads, so most people bench roughly 30 to 45 percent of what they deadlift. That is why the StrengthLevel intermediate tier sits at 1.25x bodyweight for bench versus 2.25x for deadlift in the male standards. Why is the bench press the most-tracked upper-body lift?

The reason 1x feels harder than its tier suggests is that the median trainee is heavily selected: people who quit lifting after 6 months are not logging into StrengthLevel. Do grip width and back arch change how much I can bench?
Yes, but the effect is small for most lifters. A wider grip (1.5x shoulder width or more) shortens the bar path by 5 to 15 percent and lets you bench 3 to 8 percent more than a shoulder-width grip in 2018 EMG and biomechanics studies, at the cost of more anterior-shoulder stress. A pronounced arch (legal in powerlifting, controversial in bodybuilding) cuts bar travel further and can add another 5 to 10 percent, which is why competition benches look so different from gym sets. Should I trust an estimated 1RM, or actually test with a spotter?
An estimate is fine for programming percentages week to week. A true tested 1RM is more accurate when you need a hard number, for a meet entry, a peaking block, or a transition between training cycles. Validation studies (LeSuer et al., Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research 1997) put the formulas inside about 5 percent at 1 to 5 reps for trained lifters, but the bench specifically benefits from direct testing because the failure mode is dangerous: a missed bench traps you under the bar in a way a missed deadlift or squat does not. If you test, use a competent spotter (or a power rack with safety pins set just above chest height), work up in 5 to 10 percent jumps from 80 percent of your estimated 1RM, and stop after the first grinding single. Do not chase a missed attempt.
