Frequently Asked Questions about the Retaining Wall Block Calculator

How does the calculator count retaining wall blocks?
It sizes the wall the way you actually buy blocks, rounding up in each direction. The number of courses (rows) is the wall height divided by the block height, rounded up. The blocks per course is the wall length divided by the block face length, rounded up. Multiplying the two gives the base block count, and then your waste percent is added on top.
Why is the block count higher than wall area divided by block face area?
Because you cannot buy a fraction of a block. A partial block at the end of a course and a partial top course both get bought whole, so rounding up each row and column gives a higher, more realistic number than the smooth area estimate. The calculator shows the area estimate too, so you can see the difference. The continuous estimate is wall area divided by the block face area (face length times height).
How much base gravel does a retaining wall need?
Segmental walls sit on a compacted granular leveling pad. A common guideline is a pad at least 6 inches thick that extends about 6 inches past the block on both the front and back, so the default trench width is the block depth plus 12 inches. The calculator multiplies wall length by trench width by depth to get cubic feet, then converts to cubic yards (divide by 27) and tons using a loose crushed gravel density of about 105 pounds per cubic foot.
What is a cap block and do I need one?
Cap blocks are the finishing units that top the highest course, giving the wall a clean edge and often hiding the hollow cores below. They run in a single row along the wall, so the count is the wall length divided by the cap length, rounded up. Caps are optional. Turn the cap row off if your block system reuses the standard unit on top or if you do not want a finished cap.
What waste percentage should I add?
A 10 percent allowance is a reasonable default for straight walls. Add more, often 12 to 15 percent, when the wall has curves, corners, steps, or many cuts, since each cut can waste part of a block. The waste percent is applied to both the wall block and cap counts, then rounded up to whole blocks.
Does the cost estimate include everything?
No. The optional cost figure covers only the blocks and caps you enter a price for. It does not include base gravel, drainage stone behind the wall, geogrid reinforcement, adhesive, delivery, or labor. Treat the total as a materials starting point and get a supplier quote for the full project. This tool is an estimate, not a construction or engineering specification.
