How many studs do I need for a wall?
The standard on-center rule is studs equal the ceiling of the wall length in inches divided by the spacing, plus one for the stud at the far end. A 20 ft (240 in) wall at 16 in OC needs ceil(240 / 16) + 1, which is 15 + 1, or 16 field studs. The extra +1 makes sure both ends of the wall have a stud.
What is the difference between 16 in and 24 in on center?
On center (OC) is the distance from the center of one stud to the center of the next. 16 in OC is the most common spacing for load-bearing walls and works with standard 4 ft wide sheathing and drywall. 24 in OC uses fewer studs and is allowed for many non-load-bearing and some advanced-framing walls, but it can need thicker sheathing or drywall to stay rigid.
How do openings add king and jack studs?
Each rough opening for a door or window needs framing around it. This calculator adds 2 king studs (full-height studs on each side) and 2 jack studs (trimmers that carry the header) for every opening, which is the common framing rule of thumb. Those four studs are added on top of the field studs, leaving the count on the safe side for headers and cripples.
Why are there 2 or 3 plates?
A platform-framed wall has one bottom (sole) plate and a top plate. Most walls use a double top plate, so the default is 3 plates total. Each plate runs the full length of the wall, so plate lumber equals the plate count times the wall length. Pick 2 plates if your wall uses a single top plate.
How is total linear feet of lumber calculated?
Total linear feet equals all studs times the wall height, plus the plate count times the wall length. For a 20 ft wall that is 8 ft tall with 20 total studs and 3 plates, that is 20 times 8 (160 ft of studs) plus 3 times 20 (60 ft of plates), for 220 linear feet. The plate boards line then divides each plate run by your stock board length and rounds up.
Does this account for waste or off-angle cuts?
No. It is a simplified estimate for one straight wall. It omits project-specific corners, intersections, backing, blocking, headers, sill and cripple details, hold-downs, bracing, waste, and local framing requirements. Build the order from the plans and code rather than treating this as an exact count.
