How does this calculator find the maximum joist span?
The calculator treats a joist as a simply supported beam under a uniform load and takes the smaller of a basic bending span and deflection span. Published AWC and IRC tables include additional assumptions and adjustment factors, so this simplified equation does not reproduce every tabulated span.
What live and dead loads should I use?
The calculator offers common planning values such as 40 psf live load for living areas and 30 psf for sleeping rooms. Required live load, dead load, deflection limit, and load combinations depend on the adopted code and the actual assembly. Enter project-specific values from the design rather than assuming the presets apply.
Why does deflection sometimes control instead of strength?
Deeper, stiffer joists and stronger grades can be strong enough to carry the load long before they feel acceptably firm underfoot. When that happens, the L/360 deflection limit caps the span before the bending stress does, so deflection governs. The calculator shows both the bending-limited and deflection-limited spans so you can see which one controls and by how much, which is useful when a bouncy floor is the real concern rather than failure.
Why are the actual joist dimensions smaller than 2 by 8?
Nominal lumber sizes describe the rough-sawn dimension, not the finished board. After it is dried and planed smooth on all four sides, a nominal 2x8 measures about 1.5 by 7.25 inches, a 2x10 is 1.5 by 9.25 inches, and a 2x12 is 1.5 by 11.25 inches. The calculator uses these dressed dimensions to compute the section modulus and moment of inertia, because the smaller real cross section is what actually carries the load.
How many joists will I need?
Enter the floor run, meaning the distance the joists repeat along, and the calculator returns the joist count as floor of the run in inches divided by the spacing, plus one, so there is a joist at each end. For example, a 20 foot run at 16 inches on center needs floor of 240 divided by 16, which is 15, plus 1, for 16 joists. This is a framing-line count and does not add extra joists for doubled members under walls, stair openings, or hangers.
Can I rely on this for a real build or permit?
Treat it as a planning estimate, not a stamped structural design. It follows published IRC and AWC span-table relationships for common visually graded lumber, but it does not account for cantilevers, notching, point loads, bearing conditions, blocking, or engineered products like I-joists and LVL. Always confirm spans against your local adopted code and the manufacturer tables, and have a licensed engineer or your building department sign off before you frame load-bearing structure.
