Turkey Cooking Time Calculator
Estimate 325 F turkey roasting time from the USDA timetable for an 8 to 24 lb stuffed or unstuffed bird, with an optional serving-time schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Turkey Cooking Time Calculator
How long does it take to cook a turkey?
The calculator covers an 8 to 24 lb whole turkey at 325 F. It interpolates between the stuffed and unstuffed time anchors in the USDA timetable instead of applying one minutes-per-pound rate to every weight. For example, the model gives 3 hours 45 minutes for a 14 lb unstuffed bird. Confirm 165 F with a thermometer.
What oven temperature should I use to roast a turkey?
The USDA recommends a constant oven temperature of 325 F for a whole turkey. Lower temperatures keep the bird too long in the 40 F to 140 F range where bacteria multiply, so this calculator does not suggest going below 325 F. Roasting at 325 F gives even cooking without drying out the breast.
What internal temperature means the turkey is done?
A turkey is safe to eat when the deepest part of the breast and the innermost part of the thigh both reach 165 F, measured with a food thermometer. If you cook stuffing inside the bird, the center of the stuffing must also reach 165 F. Color and the cooking time are not reliable on their own, so always check the temperature.
When should I put the turkey in the oven?
Enter your serve time and the calculator works backward by the estimated cook time and a 20 minute rest. It shows both the oven-in time for finishing at the selected time and the earlier oven-in time for completing the rest by then. These clock times can wrap to the previous day for a late or long cook.
Should I cook the stuffing inside or outside the turkey?
Cooking stuffing separately is the safer option. If you select stuffed, the calculator uses the stuffed entries in its USDA timetable and requires the center of the stuffing to reach 165 F. The added time varies by weight, so the model does not use a fixed extra number of minutes per pound.
Why does my turkey take longer or shorter than the estimate?
The timetable assumes a fully thawed bird and a 325 F oven. Starting temperature, oven accuracy, stuffing, and door openings can change the real time. Treat the result as a planning estimate and rely on a thermometer reading of 165 F in the breast and thigh, and in the center of stuffing when present.
