Frequently Asked Questions about the Gravel Calculator
How deep should I lay gravel?
Garden paths and decorative beds need 2 to 3 inches. Driveways require 4 to 6 inches in two layers (a 3 inch base of crushed stone plus 2 to 3 inches of topcoat). French drains use 6 to 12 inches of gravel.
How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?
About 2,700 lbs (1.35 tons) for pea gravel, 2,970 lbs (1.49 tons) for crushed stone, and 2,835 lbs (1.42 tons) for river rock. Densities range from 95 to 110 lbs per cubic foot depending on stone type and moisture.
How much area does 1 ton of gravel cover?
At 2 inches deep, 1 ton of crushed stone covers about 100 sqft. At 4 inches deep, that drops to roughly 50 sqft. Bulk pricing by the ton is usually cheaper than buying bags for projects over 1 cubic yard.
What size gravel is best for a driveway?
Use 3/4 inch crushed stone (also called #57) for the topcoat: it locks together and resists shifting. The base layer can be larger 1.5 to 2 inch crushed stone (#2) for drainage. Avoid round pea gravel on slopes.
Should I add extra for compaction and settling?
Yes. Gravel settles 10 to 15 percent after compaction and use, especially crushed stone in driveways. Order 10 percent extra so the finished depth matches your plan after the first heavy rain or vehicle pass.
