Frequently Asked Questions about the Tile Calculator

How much waste should I add for tile?
10 percent for straight (square/grid) layouts, 15 percent for diagonal patterns, and up to 20 percent for herringbone, chevron, or complex mosaics. Bigger rooms need more cuts at the edges, so round up.
Do tile patterns really need more waste?
Yes. Diagonal layouts cut more tiles at the walls, and herringbone or chevron need angled cuts on nearly every edge tile. Pinwheel or modular patterns waste even more because mis-sized tiles cannot be reused.
How is grout width included in the calculation?
Each tile is treated as its own size plus one grout joint on two sides (length plus grout, width plus grout). That accurately reflects how tiles sit on a real floor or wall.
What grout joint width should I use?
1/16 in for rectified porcelain, 1/8 in for standard ceramic, 1/4 in for natural stone or rustic looks. Manufacturer specs override these defaults.
Why buy whole boxes instead of loose tiles?
Tile shade varies between production batches. Buying full boxes from the same lot ensures color consistency and gives you spares for future repairs.
