Essay Word Count Tool

The conventional rule for typed essays in 12pt Times New Roman is about 250 words per double-spaced page and about 500 words per single-spaced page. That assumes one-inch margins, no block quotes, and standard paragraph indentation. A 5-page double-spaced paper lands near 1,250 words. The calculator defaults to these conventions, but you can switch to a custom words-per-page value if your professor specifies a different format like 11pt Calibri or 1.5 line spacing.

Higher Flesch Reading Ease scores generally indicate shorter sentences and words. The formula is not clamped, so unusual text can score below 0 or above 100. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is also an estimate based on sentence and syllable counts, not proof that a student at that grade will understand the subject.

The tool splits on terminal punctuation: periods, exclamation marks, and question marks followed by whitespace or the end of the text. Decimal numbers like 3.14 are masked first so they do not register as a sentence break. Quoted dialogue inside one sentence and abbreviations like Dr. or U.S. can still over-count by one or two sentences in rare cases, but for ordinary essay prose the result matches what a person would count by hand.

Assignments may specify words, pages, or both. Page length varies with font, spacing, margins, headings, and citations, so a word limit is more reproducible. Follow the assignment format and use the calculator's page estimate only as a planning aid.

Handwriting size varies by two or three times between students. One person fits 8 words on a line, another fits 14, so two essays that look the same length on lined paper can differ by hundreds of words. Typed counts pull words straight from the text, so a 500 word target hits 500 exactly. If your professor wants a handwritten draft, write to a word target first, then transcribe by hand: that way the content is the right length and you avoid the post-draft surprise of being 30 percent short or long.
