Not a federal aid calculation

CSS Profile supports institutional nonfederal aid. This planning estimate cannot determine Pell eligibility or predict an aid package.

Notes

  • Planning scenario only. The income allowances and assessment rates are model assumptions, not a universal CSS Profile formula.
  • The full home-equity amount entered is included. Enter the amount required by the institution's own net price calculator.

This is not an official CSS Profile result and cannot determine federal Pell eligibility. Each college applies its own institutional formula and may include or exclude items differently. Use the college's net price calculator or financial aid office for an institution-specific estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Institutional EFC Planning Calculator

What is the difference between the FAFSA and the CSS Profile?
FAFSA produces the federal SAI used in federal-aid processes. CSS Profile collects additional information for institutions that use it to allocate their own aid. Each institution can apply its own methodology and follow-up questions, so this calculator's CSS-style EFC is a hypothetical planning model, not an official CSS Profile result.
Why was the EFC renamed to the Student Aid Index (SAI)?
Congress replaced the federal EFC term with SAI starting in 2024-25 because the old name sounded like a bill. SAI is an index, not a charge or expected payment. This calculator keeps EFC in its label for a CSS-style planning output, but colleges are not required to use that label or this formula.
Why does the CSS Profile count my home equity when the FAFSA does not?
FAFSA excludes the primary residence from reportable assets. CSS Profile can collect home information, but each institution decides whether and how it affects institutional aid. This calculator includes exactly the home-equity amount you enter and applies no hidden income multiple or cap.
How do retirement contributions affect my CSS Profile EFC?
Treatment of retirement assets and current contributions depends on the application and institution. This calculator adds back 50% of entered contributions as a scenario assumption. That percentage is not an official CSS Profile rule and should not be used to predict a school's aid calculation.
When should I use the EFC calculator versus the FAFSA calculator?
Use Federal Student Aid's official estimator and FAFSA process for federal aid. If a target institution requires CSS Profile, complete that application and use the institution's net price calculator for planning. The two simplified Calcoid tools may illustrate input sensitivity, but neither produces an official award or a reliable planning range.
