Course Grade Calculator

Each category contributes weightPercent times currentScorePercent divided by 100 to your overall grade. The calculator sums those contributions, divides by the total weight you entered, and multiplies by 100 to get a current grade percentage on the 0 to 100 scale. Dividing by your entered weight (not always 100) means a partial syllabus, for example a class where the final exam has not been included yet, still returns a fair mid-semester estimate.

Provide a target overall grade and the final exam's weight, and the calculator solves (target minus current weighted sum) divided by finalExamWeightPercent, times 100. The result is the minimum percentage you need on the final to finish at your target. If the calculator flags the result as impossible, the required score is above 100% (not reachable without extra credit), so you need to either lower the target or look for bonus opportunities.

Not while the term is in progress. The calculator divides by whatever total weight you enter, so 35% of weight allocated produces a sensible mid-semester estimate. The exception is when you ask for the score needed on the final: in that case the combined category weight plus the final exam weight must stay at or below 100%, otherwise the math breaks down. If they exceed 100%, the calculator rejects the inputs and you should re-check your syllabus.

The calculator uses one common plus/minus mapping, with A+ at 97%, A at 93%, A- at 90%, and the pattern continuing to D- at 60%. Below 60% is F. These are internal cutoffs, not a standard US scale. Use the boundaries in your syllabus for an official grade.

The category scores accept 0 to 100, so you cannot directly enter a 105% homework score from extra credit. Two workarounds: bump the category weight to reflect the bonus (for example, an instructor offering 5% extra credit could be modeled as a 5% category with a 100% score), or enter the effective adjusted percentage for that category. For curved classes, plug in the adjusted scores once the curve is applied; the math itself does not curve anything.
