What is the Pomodoro Technique?
Pomodoro is a time-boxing method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s while he was a university student in Italy. You work in 25 minute focused intervals (one Pomodoro) separated by a 5 minute break, and take a longer 15 to 30 minute break after every fourth Pomodoro. The short bursts protect attention from drift, the breaks let working memory consolidate, and the visible session count gives you a concrete metric of effort separate from how productive you feel. How does spaced repetition work?
Spaced repetition schedules later reviews based on recall performance, so remembered material returns after a longer interval and missed material returns sooner. It can improve long-term retention compared with massed review. This calculator's 80% efficiency factor is a planning heuristic, not a measured universal time saving.
Do study methods really differ by 2x?
Retrieval practice and spaced review often outperform repeated rereading for delayed retention, but the effect is not a universal 2x multiplier across subjects and learners. The calculator's method factors are scenario assumptions. Use them to compare plans, then replace them with your own observed study time and results.
Why is cramming a bad strategy?
Cramming compresses study into the night before a test, which usually means cutting sleep. Sleep is when the hippocampus consolidates the day's new memories into longer-term storage in the neocortex, a process well established in cognitive neuroscience (Walker, "Why We Sleep", 2017, summarizing decades of consolidation research). Skipping sleep to study costs you the very window your brain uses to lock in what you just learned. Spreading the same total hours across more days also benefits from spaced repetition: each review session re-anchors the material instead of laying it down once and hoping it sticks. When the calculator flags daily load above 8 hr, that is the cramming warning.
What is a sustainable maximum study time per day?
There is no universal daily ceiling. Capacity depends on sleep, health, prior knowledge, task difficulty, breaks, and other obligations. Eight hours is this calculator's default planning cap, not a safety or productivity threshold. Adjust it to a schedule you can sustain and seek academic or health support when workload is unmanageable.
