Weighted Grade Calculator

A simple average treats every assignment equally: if you have a 100 on a quiz and a 60 on a final, the simple average is 80. A weighted average multiplies each grade by how much that category counts toward the course, then divides by the total weight. If the quiz is worth 10 percent and the final is worth 50 percent of your grade, the weighted average is (100 x 10 + 60 x 50) / 60 = 66.7, much closer to the final score because the final pulls harder. Almost every college and high school course uses weighted grading, with category weights printed on the syllabus.

There is no standard category split. A syllabus might use Homework 20%, Quizzes 20%, Tests 40%, and Final 20%, but labs, papers, projects, and participation can change the structure completely. Enter the weights from your own syllabus. The calculator also normalizes partial-semester weights that total less than 100%.

When an instructor weights tests more heavily, the intent is often to emphasize independently demonstrated mastery over practice work. That is not universal. In any weighted system, a five-point change in a 40% category changes the overall grade four times as much as the same change in a 10% category.

The calculator offers a plus/minus mapping with A+ at 97%, A at 93%, A- at 90%, and a 10-point mapping with A at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, and D at 60%. Neither is a national standard. Select the option that matches your syllabus.

Extra credit may raise a category above 100% or appear as a separate bonus category, depending on the syllabus. This calculator accepts category grades through 130% and total weights through 110%. Its resulting letter is mathematical only; the instructor's policy determines whether and how the bonus counts.
