Why is a single TOEFL score reported as an IELTS range and not one exact band?
Because the two tests do not measure identical skills. TOEFL iBT scores reading and listening with multiple-choice items on a 0 to 30 section scale and assesses speaking and writing with rubric-graded responses, while IELTS uses different task types and trained human graders for all four skills. A statistically equivalent score therefore covers a half-band window rather than landing on one exact decimal. TOEFL 94-101, for example, all sit inside the IELTS 7.0 band, and the converter reports the band rather than inventing fake precision.
How does the section-level comparison differ from the overall score?
An overall TOEFL of 100 always concords to IELTS 7.0, but the four sections do not have to be balanced. A student with TOEFL Listening 28, Reading 28, Speaking 22, Writing 22 still totals 100, but the per-skill chart shows Listening and Reading near IELTS 8.5, Speaking around 7.0, and Writing around 7.0. Section equivalence matters for programs that publish minimum per-skill scores: many UK master's programs require IELTS 6.5 in every band, not just the overall, and the section view tells you whether you meet that rule before swapping tests.
Do US universities accept either TOEFL or IELTS?
Most do, and acceptance has widened sharply since 2020. All eight Ivy League universities, the entire University of California system, NYU, Stanford, MIT, Georgetown, and the large majority of the top 100 US universities accept both tests on equal footing. Some programs publish a TOEFL minimum and quietly accept the equivalent IELTS band, and others publish both numbers explicitly.
