What is a typical home pool size in gallons?
Most residential inground pools hold 15,000 to 30,000 gallons. A 16 x 32 ft rectangle with an average depth of 5 ft is about 19,200 gallons. Above-ground round pools (24 ft diameter, 4 ft deep) hold roughly 13,500 gallons.
Why do I need to know my pool volume?
Every chemical dose (chlorine, pH adjusters, algaecide, salt) is calibrated per gallon. Guess too low and the water stays cloudy or unsafe. Guess too high and you waste money or burn swimmers' eyes. Volume also drives pump turnover time.
How is the chlorine estimate calculated?
It uses 1 ounce of trichlor per 10,000 gallons as a rough starting dose to raise free chlorine by about 1 ppm. Real-world dosing depends on sunlight, bather load, stabilizer level, and current chlorine reading. Always test before dosing.
Should I use average depth or shallow + deep end?
If your pool has a shallow and a deep end, enter both. The calculator averages them, which is accurate enough for chemical dosing. Use uniform depth only for above-ground pools or flat-bottom designs.
Does pool volume change for salt water vs chlorine pools?
No. Volume is purely about water capacity. Salt systems do need an initial salt charge (typically 3,000 to 3,500 ppm), which is calculated per gallon. Same pool volume, different chemistry.
