Frequently Asked Questions about the Race Pace Calculator

What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time-per-distance (minutes per mile, minutes per km) and gets smaller as you run faster. Speed is distance-per-time (mph, km/h) and gets larger as you run faster. They are mathematical inverses: speed in mph equals 60 divided by pace in minutes-per-mile. An 8:00/mi pace is 7.5 mph. A 5:00/km pace is 12.0 km/h. Distance runners almost universally think in pace because the math at goal-pace splits is easier to do in your head while running. Track and elite middle-distance runners think in speed because the times are short enough that fractional km/h differences matter. Recreational gym treadmills default to mph because the US fitness industry adopted the imperial speed convention from the 1980s onward, while almost every running watch (Garmin, Polar, Coros, Apple Watch) lets you toggle between pace and speed views.
How do I use a split table during training?
Use the split table as a pacing contract before the race. Tape the cumulative-time column to your race-day arm band or write the four or five key checkpoint times on the back of your hand. During the race, every time you cross a marked km or mile, glance at your watch and compare it against the cumulative target. If you are within +/- 5 seconds of the cumulative target, hold pace. If you are more than 5 seconds ahead, slow down deliberately for the next 30 seconds (going out too fast is the number-one race-day mistake). If you are more than 10 seconds behind, decide whether to surge to recover the gap or accept a slightly slower finish. For training, run the split-table targets in your goal-pace tempo runs and progression long runs to build the pacing memory you need to execute on race day.
Should I run even splits, negative splits, or positive splits?
Even splits are a useful default because they keep early effort controlled. A small negative split can work when you know your current fitness and the course, while a large positive split often signals that the opening pace was too aggressive. World records have been set with different split patterns, so no strategy guarantees a faster result. Use the calculator to compare the timing plan, then adjust for elevation, weather, aid stations, and your recent training.
Why does pace per mile dominate in the United States?
Because the United States is one of three countries that did not switch to the metric system (the others are Liberia and Myanmar), and the US road-running scene inherited the British imperial mile from the late-19th-century track and field tradition. Even though World Athletics has measured records in metric (km) since 1962 and almost every world-record race is held on a 400 m metric track, US road races publish course distances in miles and runners think in minutes per mile. The Boston Marathon, the oldest annual marathon (1897), measures its course in miles with mile-marker signs. Garmin watches sold in the US default to imperial. Running magazines (Runner's World, Trail Runner) print training plans in miles per week. International runners and US-based elites who train globally typically work fluently in both, but if you race only in the US you can get away with pure min-per-mile thinking. Outside North America, min-per-km is the universal convention.
Why is 1 mile exactly 1.609344 km?
Because the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, defined 1 international yard as exactly 0.9144 meters. A statute mile is 1,760 yards, so 1 mile = 1,760 x 0.9144 m = 1,609.344 m = 1.609344 km exactly. Before 1959, the US and UK used slightly different mile definitions (the US survey mile was 1,609.3472 m, off by 3.2 mm), and the 1959 agreement settled the conflict in favor of the slightly shorter international mile. This conversion is what makes a 5K equal exactly 3.10685596 miles to 8 decimal places. The calculator rounds the per-distance mile echo to 5 decimals (3.10686) because no GPS watch is accurate enough to resolve the 6th decimal, and rounds the marathon mile equivalent to 26.21876 mi (42.195 km / 1.609344) for the same reason.
