What is lactate threshold pace?
Lactate threshold pace is the fastest running pace you can hold in a roughly steady metabolic state, near the point where blood lactate starts to climb sharply. In practice it is close to the pace you can sustain for about 30 to 60 minutes of hard, even effort. Training near this pace raises the speed you can hold before fatigue sets in, which is why it anchors so many running plans.
How does this calculator estimate my LT pace?
From a recent race, it uses Pete Riegel's endurance formula, time2 equals time1 times (distance2 divided by distance1) raised to the power 1.06, to project the pace you could hold for a 30-minute maximal effort. That 30-minute effort is the standard field-test duration for lactate threshold. From a 30-minute time trial no projection is needed, so your average pace over the 30 minutes is taken directly as your LT pace.
How do I run the 30-minute time trial test?
Warm up well, then run as hard as you can hold steady for 30 minutes, solo and on flat ground so you do not start too fast. The distance you cover divided by 30 minutes gives your average pace, which approximates your lactate threshold pace, a field test popularized by coach Joe Friel. If you wear a heart-rate monitor, your average heart rate over the last 20 minutes is a good estimate of your threshold heart rate.
How are the training pace zones calculated?
Each zone is a band expressed as a percentage of your LT pace, since pace is just time per distance. Faster work sits below 100 percent of LT pace (repetition about 88 to 93 percent, interval 93 to 98 percent), threshold work brackets it (98 to 105 percent), and easier running sits above it (marathon 105 to 115 percent, easy 115 to 130 percent, recovery 130 to 150 percent). Because every zone scales from the same LT pace, a faster threshold shifts all of your training paces faster at once.
How accurate is the estimate?
The projection is most reliable when your input effort lasts about 15 to 90 minutes, so a 10K, a 30-minute time trial, or a half marathon all work well. Predicting from a short sprint or a multi-hour ultra is rougher, because the Riegel model assumes one fatigue factor across every distance. Results also assume flat terrain, even pacing, and similar weather, so retest every 6 to 8 weeks as your fitness changes.
Is this a substitute for a lab lactate test?
No. A true lactate threshold is measured in a lab by sampling blood lactate at rising intensities, while this calculator only estimates it from your pace. Treat the output as a training guide for educational use, not medical advice, and check with a coach or clinician before starting hard training, especially if you have a health condition.
