Where does the chin-to-eyebrow ski sizing rule come from?
It is the long-standing shop-floor rule that an all-mountain ski stood on its tail should land somewhere between the bottom of your chin and your eyebrows. The chin sits at roughly 90 percent of standing height for most adults and the eyebrow at roughly 105 percent, so the rule translates to a recommended length somewhere between 90 and 105 percent of your height in cm, with the midpoint (~100 percent) used as the intermediate all-mountain baseline. Evo, REI, Powder7, and Christy Sports all publish size charts that, when you back out the math, anchor on the same height-as-baseline midpoint and then layer style and skill offsets on top. The rule survived because it correlates well with the weight-based engineering specs ski makers actually design to. The calculator uses your height as the starting baseline and then adjusts for skiing style, skill, and body type, which is exactly what a good shop fitter does in person.
Why should beginners ski on shorter skis than the chart suggests?
Because a shorter ski pivots faster, makes wedge and stem turns easier to initiate, and forgives the late edge changes that almost every first-season skier makes. A longer ski has more swing weight at the tip and tail, which means it takes more leg force and a cleaner edge change to redirect from one turn to the next. For a skier still learning to stand centered on the ski and link parallel turns on a green or easy blue run, that extra length translates directly into fatigue and skidded turns. The calculator subtracts 10 cm for a beginner skill level, which puts a first-season adult skier roughly between chin and the bottom of the nose rather than at eyebrow height. As soon as you can comfortably carve parallel turns on a steeper blue and start skiing above 25 mph, the trade-off flips and a longer ski starts to outperform the trainer.
Why do powder skis run longer, and how much wider should the waist be?
Powder skis run longer, by roughly 5 cm over your all-mountain length, because length and waist width together determine surface area, and surface area is what keeps the ski planing on top of soft snow instead of sinking into it. A longer ski spreads your weight over more snow, which lifts the running base higher in the snowpack and keeps the tips from diving on a turn. Modern powder skis pair the extra length with a waist width of 100 to 120 mm (versus 80 to 90 mm for a typical all-mountain ski) and a heavily rockered tip and tail that lifts even more under load. The calculator adds 5 cm for the powder style as a midpoint, which lands close to where most published Volkl, Black Crows, Faction, and Atomic powder sizing charts sit relative to their all-mountain counterparts. The terrain note also reminds you that if you ski mostly off-piste, an all-mountain ski with a wider waist (95 mm or more) is the more common modern setup.
Why do race skis need to be longer for stability?
Longer race skis can provide more effective edge and stability at speed, but the correct length depends on discipline, athlete category, and the applicable rules. Under the 2025/26 FIS World Cup equipment specifications, minimum lengths include 155 cm for women's slalom, 193 cm for men's giant slalom, and 218 cm for men's downhill. Those competition minimums are not recreational sizing recommendations. The calculator adds a general 5 cm race adjustment, so competitive racers should use the current FIS table and their equipment supplier's guidance instead.
Are park and twin-tip skis really shorter, and by how much?
Yes, by about 8 cm shorter than your all-mountain length, and the reason is swing weight. Park skiing rewards quick spins (180s, 360s, 540s and beyond), nose presses, butter turns, and switch landings. Every one of those moves is biomechanically easier on a shorter ski because there is less mass at each tip to swing through the rotation. Twin-tip park skis also have shorter effective edges and softer flex patterns than all-mountain skis, which lets the ski compress on a rail press or take-off without forcing the rider out of position. The convention published by Line, Armada, and 4FRNT (the three best-known park brands) is to size park skis at roughly chin height for an intermediate park rider, or about height minus 10 cm. The calculator subtracts 8 cm for the freestyle and park style as a midpoint, which keeps the recommendation a touch longer for landings while still giving you the swing weight benefit for spins.
