Why does the same step count burn different calories for two different people?
The implemented calorie estimate uses a fixed 0.04 calorie-per-step reference at 150 lb, scaled linearly by body weight and the selected pace multiplier. Stride length does not change calories in this model. It changes only the separate distance, calories-per-mile, and walking-time outputs.
Is the 10,000 steps a day target backed by medicine, or is it marketing?
Marketing, originally. The number traces to a 1965 Japanese pedometer named Manpo-kei (literally 10,000-step meter), released by Yamasa Tokei Keiki around the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The kanji character for 10,000 even looks like a person walking, which made for a memorable ad. The WHO and CDC have never set 10,000 steps as a guideline. They recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity. Modern epidemiology (I-Min Lee, JAMA Internal Medicine 2019; Paluch et al., Lancet Public Health 2022) finds mortality benefits flatten somewhere between 7,000 and 8,000 steps per day for adults under 60 and around 6,000 to 8,000 for older adults. Treat 10,000 as a useful round target, not a magic threshold; 6,000 to 8,000 honest steps per day delivers most of the health benefit the research can detect.
How do Fitbit, Apple Watch, and Garmin actually convert steps into calories?
Wearables can combine motion, heart rate, user profile, pace, and proprietary models. This calculator does not reproduce those device algorithms. It uses a transparent fixed-per-step heuristic scaled by weight and a selected pace multiplier, so its calorie estimate can differ materially from a watch or laboratory measurement.
Why does a brisker pace burn more calories per step, not just per minute?
The model applies fixed pace multipliers to the per-step estimate: 0.9 for casual, 1.0 for moderate, 1.15 for brisk, and 1.4 for power walking. These are software assumptions, not measurements of your oxygen use or gait efficiency.
What matters more for total burn: more steps, or extra body weight?
Both scale the result linearly in this fixed-per-step model. Doubling the step count doubles the estimate, and doubling body weight also doubles it when pace stays fixed. That mathematical behavior is an implementation detail, not a claim that real energy use changes perfectly linearly.
