Frequently Asked Questions about the Brick Calculator
How many bricks do I need per square foot?
It depends on the brick size and mortar joint. With the standard 3/8 in mortar joint, US modular bricks (7.625 x 2.25 in) yield about 6.86 bricks per square foot, standard bricks (8 x 2.25 in) yield about 6.55, engineer bricks (7.625 x 2.75 in) yield about 5.76, and the larger queen bricks (9.625 x 2.75 in) drop to about 4.61 per square foot.
How much waste should I add for cuts and breakage?
5 percent covers simple rectangular walls with few openings. Step up to 10 percent when the wall has multiple windows, doors, or angled cuts. Keep a few leftover bricks for future repairs, since they are often hard to match later. The calculator accepts any waste factor up to 50 percent.
Does this calculator account for window and door openings?
Yes. Add each opening as a length and height. The calculator subtracts the total opening area from the gross wall area before computing brick count and mortar volume, so you only pay for the masonry you actually need.
How much mortar do I need per square foot of brick wall?
The calculator uses the Brick Industry Association rule of thumb of roughly 0.05 cubic feet of wet mortar per square foot of single-wythe wall with 3/8 in joints (about 7 cubic feet per 1,000 modular brick). A standard 80 lb bag of dry mortar mix yields roughly 0.5 cubic feet of wet mortar, so divide your total cubic feet by 0.5 to get the bag count, which the calculator does for you automatically.
Which brick size should I pick if I am laying European bricks?
Choose European NF for the standard 240 x 71 mm face format common in Germany and the Netherlands. For other regional sizes (DF, 2DF, RF, or any non-standard format), select Custom and enter the face length and face height in inches directly.
