Frequently Asked Questions about the Brick Calculator
How many bricks do I need per square foot?
For standard US modular bricks (7.625 x 2.25 in) with a 3/8 in mortar joint, about 6.86 bricks per square foot of wall. Bigger queen or Roman bricks drop that closer to 5 per sq ft. Smaller European NF bricks come in around 5.3 per sq ft.
How much waste should I add for cuts and breakage?
Order 5 to 10 percent extra. Use 5 percent for simple rectangular walls with few openings, 10 percent for walls with several windows, doors, or angled cuts. Keep a few leftover bricks for future repairs.
Does this calculator account for window and door openings?
Yes. Add each opening as a length and height. The calculator subtracts the total opening area from the wall before computing the brick count and mortar volume.
How much mortar do I need per square foot of brick wall?
Plan for about 0.012 cubic yards (roughly 0.32 cubic feet) of wet mortar per square foot of single-wythe brick wall with standard 3/8 in joints. A typical 80 lb bag of dry mortar mix yields about 0.5 cubic feet of wet mortar.
Which brick size should I pick if I am laying European bricks?
Choose European NF for the standard 240 x 71 x 115 mm German and Dutch format. For other regional sizes (DF, 2DF, RF), pick Custom and enter the face length and face height in inches yourself.
