Frequently Asked Questions about the Carpet Calculator
Why do I need a waste allowance for carpet?
Carpet comes in fixed-width rolls, so you almost always cut off strips. Seams, irregular rooms, pattern matching, and trim mistakes all push real usage above the room area. A 10% waste allowance is typical for rectangular rooms; 15% or more is safer for complex layouts.
What roll width should I pick?
Most residential carpet comes in 12 ft rolls. Some commercial styles use 13.5 or 15 ft. A wider roll can reduce seams in larger rooms. If you do not know, pick 12 ft, since that is the most common width sold in the US.
How is square yardage calculated?
Multiply length by width in feet to get square feet, then divide by 9 (since 1 square yard equals 9 square feet). The calculator handles this for you, including the optional waste percentage and metric output.
What is included in the linear roll yardage figure?
It is a conservative estimate of how many linear feet of carpet you need to buy from a roll of the given width: area with waste divided by roll width, rounded up. Real cut plans depend on room shape and grain direction; use this as a rough buying-guide number.
Should I add padding to my order?
Almost always yes. Padding extends carpet life, dampens sound, and improves feel underfoot. The padding square yardage is normally the same as the carpet square yardage, so the calculator can show the line when you tick the padding checkbox.
