How is running pace calculated?
Pace equals your total time divided by distance. Enter a distance (in miles or kilometers) and a finish time, and the calculator returns pace in both min/mile and min/km using the exact factor of 1.609344 km per mile. It also derives speed in mph and km/h and projects finish times for five standard distances: 1 mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon.
What is a typical race pace?
Recreational runners typically finish a 5K or 10K at 9 to 11 min/mile (5:35 to 6:50 min/km). A common beginner half-marathon pace is 10 to 13 min/mile, which puts finishing time around 2:11 to 2:50. Elite marathoners run close to 4:45 min/mile (2:57 min/km), and the very fastest run under 4:40. Your own comfortable aerobic pace is the best baseline for training targets.
How accurate are the race split predictions?
The projections assume perfectly even pacing at your entered pace. Most runners slow in the back half of longer races because of fatigue and heat, so an actual marathon often comes in 5 to 15% slower than a flat projection from a 5K effort. Use the predicted times as a planning guide, not a guarantee.
Should I use mile or kilometer pace?
Use whichever unit your GPS watch and race markers display. US races almost always mark miles, while international races and many European training plans use kilometers. The calculator shows both at once, so you can cross-reference without doing any manual math.
Is faster always better in training?
No. Standard endurance plans allocate roughly 80% of weekly mileage to easy, conversational-effort runs well below race pace, with only 20% at harder intensities. Running every session at race pace builds fatigue faster than fitness, which raises injury risk without speeding up improvement.
