Frequently Asked Questions about the Pace Calculator

How is running pace calculated?
Pace is duration divided by distance. The calculator converts between minutes per mile and minutes per kilometer (1 mile equals 1.609344 km) and reports speed in mph and km/h alongside common race splits.
What is a typical race pace?
Recreational runners average 9 to 11 minutes per mile (5:30 to 7:00 per km) at 5K and 10K. Elite marathoners run near 4:45 per mile (3:00 per km). Beginner half-marathon pace is usually 10 to 13 minutes per mile.
How accurate are the race split predictions?
Splits assume even pacing across the full distance. In reality, most runners fade in longer races due to fatigue and heat. Expect marathon time to land 5 to 15% slower than a flat extrapolation from 5K or 10K pace.
Should I use mile or kilometer pace?
Use whatever your watch and race signage display. Most US races mark miles, most international races mark kilometers. Knowing both helps when reading training plans written in either unit.
Is faster always better in training?
No. Most endurance plans use 80% easy pace (Zone 2, slower than race pace) and 20% hard intervals. Running every session at race pace leads to fatigue and injury without improving fitness faster.
