How is the height difference calculated?
The calculator normalizes both heights to centimeters, then reports the absolute difference in cm and inches (1 in = 2.54 cm). It also reports the ratio (height 1 divided by height 2) and the symmetric percent difference, defined as the absolute difference divided by the mean of the two heights, multiplied by 100. A 180 cm and 165 cm pair gives a 15 cm gap, a 1.09 ratio, and an 18.18 percent difference.
What is the difference between percent difference and percent taller?
Percent difference is symmetric. It divides the gap by the mean of the two heights, so swapping the inputs gives the same number. Percent taller is asymmetric: it divides the gap by the shorter height and tells you how much more the taller person measures. 180 cm vs 165 cm is an 18.18 percent symmetric difference, but the taller person is 9.09 percent taller. Both numbers are correct answers to slightly different questions, so the calculator returns both.
Where do the percentile rank numbers come from?
From the CDC National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which is the standard US adult-height reference. The calculator uses a mean of 175.5 cm with a 7.4 cm standard deviation for men and a mean of 162.0 cm with a 7.0 cm standard deviation for women, treats heights as normally distributed, and computes the percentile as the standard normal cumulative distribution function of the z-score. Picking a gender unlocks the percentile chip; leaving it blank hides it because the underlying distribution depends on the population.
Why cap the input at 250 cm?
Robert Wadlow, the tallest verified person in modern history, measured 272 cm at his peak. Living humans rarely exceed 230 cm, so the calculator caps inputs at 250 cm to keep the field tied to realistic adult heights. Values above the cap return null instead of a misleading percentile, since the CDC NHANES normal model also breaks down in the far tail.
How are the reference objects chosen?
The calculator picks one of three US-typical reference objects based on the taller person's height. Below 65 inches (about 5 feet 5 inches), it compares the taller person to an average sedan roof at about 60 inches. From 65 to 89 inches, it uses a standard residential interior door at 80 inches. At 90 inches and up, it switches to a basketball hoop rim at 120 inches (10 feet, the NBA and FIBA standard). The thresholds keep each reference reachable so the comparison stays informative across the full input range.
