Frequently Asked Questions about the Pokemon Type Chart

How does dual-type damage actually work?
When a Pokemon has two types, an attacking move's effectiveness is multiplied by the matchup against each defending type. So a Fire move against a Grass/Bug Pokemon is 2x against Grass and 2x against Bug, for a combined 2 x 2 = 4x. The multipliers stack, they do not average. The possible combined values are 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4. If either matchup is 0, the whole attack is 0 regardless of the other type.
Which type matchups are full immunities?
The modern chart has eight directional type immunities: Normal against Ghost, Fighting against Ghost, Ghost against Normal, Electric against Ground, Ground against Flying, Psychic against Dark, Poison against Steel, and Dragon against Fairy. A zero multiplier overrides the other defending type, so Ground does no damage to Water/Flying Gyarados because Flying is immune; Ground is neutral against Water. Abilities such as Levitate are separate from the type chart.
When was the Fairy type added and which chart does this calculator use?
Fairy was introduced in Generation 6 (Pokemon X and Y, October 2013) as the 18th type, mainly to give Dragon a hard counter. At the same time, Steel lost its resistances to Ghost and Dark. This calculator uses the modern Gen 6 onward chart, which is also what Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Pokemon GO, and the competitive VGC format use. If you are playing a Gen 1 through 5 cartridge, several matchups (especially anything involving Fairy, or Steel resisting Ghost/Dark) will not match.
Why is 4x super-effective such a big deal?
4x damage is the rare upper bound of the chart, and it usually OHKOes (knocks out in one hit) anything that is not specifically built to tank it. Classic examples include Ice attacks against Grass/Ground Pokemon like Torterra (2x for Grass times 2x for Ground), Rock attacks against Fire/Flying Pokemon like Charizard, and Ground attacks against Steel/Rock Pokemon like Tyranitar in sandstorm. Knowing which 4x matchups your team has, both offensively and defensively, is one of the biggest skill jumps in competitive play.
Which generations does this chart apply to?
The chart on this page is the standard Generation 6 onward chart, which covers Pokemon X/Y, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Sun/Moon, Sword/Shield, Legends Arceus, Scarlet/Violet, the Switch remakes, and current Pokemon GO and Unite balance. It is also the chart used by Smogon and Pokemon VGC. Generation 1 used a smaller 15-type chart without Dark, Steel, and Fairy. Generations 2 through 5 added Dark and Steel but kept Steel resisting Ghost and Dark, which the Gen 6 update removed when it added Fairy.
