Why is .300 the historical cutoff for an excellent batting average?
A .300 average is a longstanding baseball benchmark that sits well above a typical modern league average. This calculator compares batting average with the completed 2025 MLB baseline of .245. The .300 threshold remains a descriptive rule of thumb, not an official All-Star qualification.
Why is on-base percentage (OBP) considered better than batting average?
Because every time a hitter reaches base they avoid making an out, and outs are the only finite resource a team controls. Branch Rickey and statistician Allan Roth introduced the OBP idea in a 1954 Life magazine article (Rickey was Brooklyn Dodgers GM at the time) precisely to fix BA's blind spot: a hitter who walks 100 times a season helps the team almost as much as one who singles 100 times, but BA ignores walks entirely. Bill James's 1980s sabermetric work and the Moneyball-era Oakland A's of the early 2000s both validated OBP empirically: team OBP correlates with run scoring at roughly r = 0.88, versus r = 0.79 for team BA, across modern MLB seasons. MLB made OBP an official statistic in 1984. For grading a hitter today, OBP and SLG together (the slash line BA / OBP / SLG) are the two numbers professional scouts and analysts trust before they look at BA in isolation.
Why can slugging percentage exceed 1.000, and what does that actually mean?
Because SLG is total bases divided by at-bats, not hits divided by at-bats. A single is worth 1 base, a double 2, a triple 3, and a home run 4, so the theoretical maximum is 4.000 (a player who homers in every at-bat). In a small sample SLG above 1.000 happens routinely: 5 at-bats with 1 single, 1 double, and 1 home run is 7 total bases over 5 AB for a 1.400 SLG. Across a full season SLG above .700 is elite (Barry Bonds .863 in 2001 is the modern record; Babe Ruth .847 in 1920 is the all-time mark). The league-average SLG sits around .400. The metric was invented in 1923 by F. C. Lane and adopted as an official MLB statistic in 1946 precisely to capture the extra-base damage that BA missed.
What does OPS measure and why is it the modern shorthand for hitters?
OPS (On-base Plus Slugging) is simply OBP plus SLG. The idea, popularized by Pete Palmer and John Thorn in The Hidden Game of Baseball (1984), is that one number combines plate discipline (OBP) and power (SLG) into a single grade that correlates with runs scored at roughly r = 0.93, better than BA, OBP, or SLG individually. Rules of thumb for a full MLB season: above .900 is All-Star caliber, .800 to .899 is well above average, .700 to .799 is roughly league average, and below .650 is a problem. Mike Trout's career OPS sits above 1.000; Barry Bonds posted a 1.422 OPS in 2004 (the modern single-season record). OPS is mathematically inconsistent (adding two ratios with different denominators) but the empirical fit to run scoring is strong enough that broadcasters, fantasy leagues, and most front offices treat it as the default hitter scorecard.
Where does wOBA come from and how is the simplified version here different from FanGraphs?
wOBA gives different on-base events different run values. This calculator uses fixed 2021-era weights for walks, hit by pitch, singles, doubles, triples, and home runs. FanGraphs recalculates weights and scale for each season, so this simplified result is not the official or season-specific wOBA and should not be expected to match a published player value.
