Why is the 5K distance 3.10686 miles and not exactly 3 miles?
The international mile is defined as exactly 1.609344 km, so 5 km equals 3.10685596 miles. The 5K is a standard road-race and parkrun distance. The calculator uses 5.0 km as the canonical distance and rounds the mile display to 3.10686 so the final cumulative split matches your target time. A 3-mile race is about 3 percent shorter, so its finish time is not directly comparable with a 5K.
What pace do I need for a sub-25, sub-22, sub-20, or sub-16 minute 5K?
Sub-25:00 requires about 8:03/mi or 5:00/km. Sub-22:00 requires about 7:05/mi or 4:24/km. Sub-20:00 requires about 6:26/mi or 4:00/km. Sub-16:00 requires about 5:09/mi or 3:12/km. These are pace conversions, not universal fitness grades. As of July 9, 2026, the World Athletics records are 12:35.36 for men, set by Joshua Cheptegei in 2020, and 13:58.06 for women, set by Beatrice Chebet in 2025.
Does this calculator estimate a parkrun percentile?
No. Finish time alone does not support a defensible parkrun percentile. A valid comparison needs a defined event population and current result distribution. Age grading also needs your age and sex, which this calculator does not collect. Use the pace, splits, and recreational classification here, then check your official event result for placement or age grade.
Should I run a 5K with an even pace, a negative split, or a positive split?
Even pacing is a practical default because it avoids spending too much energy early. A small negative split can also work when you know your current fitness and the course. Record races do not all follow one split pattern, and hills, wind, temperature, and competition can change the best plan. The calculator shows the arithmetic for each strategy; it does not predict which strategy will produce your fastest result.
Why is the suggested easy training pace 90 seconds per mile slower than 5K race pace?
Because 5K race pace sits at roughly 95 to 100 percent of VO2 max for most trained runners, and easy aerobic running needs to sit at 60 to 75 percent of VO2 max to build mitochondrial density and capillary capacity without accumulating fatigue. Jack Daniels (Daniels' Running Formula, 3rd edition, 2014) defines easy pace as 65 to 79 percent of VO2 max, which corresponds to roughly 75 to 105 seconds per mile slower than 5K race pace depending on fitness level and the specific runner. The 90-second offset used here is the midpoint of that band and matches the easy-pace recommendations in Pete Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning and the McMillan Running calculator. If your 5K race pace is 8:00/mi, easy-run pace lands around 9:30/mi. Most runners run their easy days too fast (a common training error called gray-zone running) and adopting the 90-second offset is the single highest-leverage adjustment for building aerobic base.
