Frequently Asked Questions about the Year Progress Calculator

How is year progress calculated?
The calculator measures progress at the start of your chosen day. It divides the number of days already completed by the total days in the year (365, or 366 in a leap year) and multiplies by 100. At the start of July 1 in a 365-day year, 181 days are done, so the year is about 49.6 percent elapsed.
Does the current day count as elapsed or remaining?
The reference day counts as remaining, because it is not over yet. So the first day of a period reads 0 percent elapsed with every day remaining, and the last day reads close to 100 percent with exactly 1 day, today, still left. Days elapsed plus days remaining always equals the total days in the period.
How do you handle leap years?
Leap years follow the standard Gregorian rule: a year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. In a leap year February has 29 days and the full year has 366, and the calculator factors that into every percentage and day count automatically.
Which months belong to each quarter?
Quarters use the standard calendar grouping: Q1 is January to March, Q2 is April to June, Q3 is July to September, and Q4 is October to December. The calculator finds the quarter that contains your date and reports elapsed and remaining days against that quarter's total of 90 to 92 days.
Can I check progress for a past or future year?
Yes. Pick any date from 1900 to 2200 and the calculator shows the year, quarter, and month progress for the period that contains it. Set the date to today, or tap the Use today button, to track the current year as it unfolds.
What does the day of year number mean?
Day of year is the date's position counting from January 1 as day 1, the ordinal date defined by ISO 8601. December 31 is day 365, or day 366 in a leap year. It equals the days elapsed in the year plus one.
