Frequently Asked Questions about the Turkey Size Per Person Calculator

How many pounds of turkey do I need per person?
Plan 1 to 1.25 lb of whole bone-in turkey per adult for a standard meal, or about 1.5 lb per person if you want plenty of leftovers. The calculator multiplies your effective guest count by that per-person figure. The number looks high because roughly half the raw weight of a bone-in bird is bone, skin, and cooking shrinkage.
How does the calculator handle children?
It counts each child as half an adult portion, then adds those halves to your adult count to get an effective head count. So 8 adults and 4 children equals 10 effective guests. If your kids eat like adults, just enter them as adults instead.
How much turkey do I need for a boneless breast?
A boneless turkey breast has no bone weight, so plan about 0.5 to 0.75 lb per person, which is roughly half the bone-in figure. Switch the turkey type to boneless and the calculator halves the per-person weight for you. Boneless also yields more edible meat per pound because nothing is lost to bone.
Should I buy one big turkey or two smaller ones?
Once the total passes about 24 lb, the calculator splits the order into two or more birds. Two smaller turkeys cook faster and more evenly than one oversized bird, and they give you more crispy skin and a better mix of white and dark meat. Aim for birds in the 12 to 18 lb range when you can.
How much cooked meat does a turkey actually give me?
A whole bone-in turkey yields roughly half its raw weight as cooked, edible meat, so a 12 lb bird gives you about 6 lb of meat. A boneless breast yields more, around 70 percent, since it loses only cooking moisture and has no bone. The cooked-meat figure in the results is an estimate to help you judge leftovers, not an exact promise.
