How much can a Nest thermostat actually save on my HVAC bill?
Nest commissioned three independent studies in 2015 across 735 homes in Oregon, Indiana, and across the United States. The results converged on 10 to 12 percent savings on heating and around 15 percent on cooling, replacing a manual or non-programmable thermostat. For a typical $1,500 annual HVAC bill that works out to $130 to $175 per year. Real-world savings depend heavily on how aggressively you used setbacks before; homes that already ran a tight programmable schedule see far less.
Why does a programmable thermostat already in use only save 3 to 5 percent more?
ENERGY STAR documented this directly: most of the savings from a smart thermostat come from running a setback schedule when the house is empty or asleep. A programmable thermostat already running that schedule has captured most of the benefit. What do geofencing and ML scheduling actually do?
