Where does the 7.48 gallons per cubic foot figure come from?
It is exact unit math. One US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, and one cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches (12 x 12 x 12). Divide: 1,728 / 231 = 7.4805 gallons per cubic foot, which rounds to 7.48 for pond work. That is why a 100 cubic foot pond holds about 748 gallons of water, and a 1,000 gallon pond takes up roughly 134 cubic feet. The figure is printed on most pond liner packaging and is the only conversion that matters when you order chemicals or estimate pump turnover.
Why does each adult koi need at least 250 gallons?
Koi are not goldfish. A mature koi reaches 24 to 36 in long and 6 to 12 lb of body weight, and a single fish that size produces ammonia at a rate that needs 250 gallons of water plus mechanical and biological filtration to dilute. Most koi clubs (Associated Koi Clubs of America, Mid-Atlantic Koi Club) treat 250 gallons per fish as a hard floor, and 500 to 1,000 gallons per fish as the comfortable target. Goldfish, by contrast, top out around 6 to 8 in and only need 10 to 20 gallons each. Stock a pond for the adult size, not the 4 in juvenile you bring home.
What is the 2x volume per hour filter rule?
Pond filters are rated in gallons per hour (GPH), and the standard for a stocked garden pond is to circulate the full pond volume through the filter at least once every 60 minutes. For koi or heavily stocked goldfish ponds, double that to every 30 minutes, which is the 2x rule the calculator uses. A 1,500 gallon koi pond needs a filter rated for 3,000 GPH minimum. Undersized filters are the most common cause of green water and ammonia spikes in summer, so size up rather than down and pick a pump that pushes the rated GPH at the actual head height (vertical lift) of your waterfall or return line.
EPDM rubber vs concrete vs PVC liner, which should I pick?
EPDM rubber (such as Firestone PondGard, 45 mil) is the modern default. It lasts 40 to 50 years, flexes with frost heave, and shapes around boulders and shelves. PVC liner costs about half as much per square foot but cracks after 10 to 15 years of UV exposure, especially at the waterline. Concrete is the most permanent option (50+ years if reinforced and sealed) but cracks during freeze-thaw cycles unless you build it like a swimming pool with rebar and a proper bond beam, which doubles the cost. Why does a pond need to be deeper than 18 inches for koi to survive winter?
Surface water freezes in winter, and the ice cap traps toxic ammonia and CO2 underneath while blocking oxygen exchange. In a shallow pond, the ice can reach the bottom or push it so close that koi crowd into a few inches of liquid water and suffocate. At 18 in (0.45 m) of depth, the lower water stays liquid in most US climates because the top 6 to 12 in of ice insulates the rest.
