How does this mini-split sizing calculator work?
It starts from a single-zone rule of thumb of 25 BTU per hour for every square foot of floor area, then adjusts that load for your ceiling height, insulation quality, and sun exposure. The ceiling factor scales the load by room volume against an 8 ft standard ceiling, so a 10 ft ceiling raises the load by 25 percent. The result is the computed load in BTU/h plus the nearest standard head size that covers it.
What size mini-split do I need for a 500 square foot room?
At standard conditions (8 ft ceiling, average insulation, average sun), 500 sq ft works out to about 12,500 BTU/h, which points to a 12,000 or 18,000 BTU head depending on small adjustments. What are the standard mini-split head sizes?
Single indoor heads are commonly sold in 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, 24,000, 36,000, and 48,000 BTU/h capacities. This calculator snaps your computed load up to the smallest of these that still covers the load, so you do not undersize the unit. If your load is above 48,000 BTU, a single head will not be enough and you should look at a multi-zone system.
Why does insulation and sun exposure change the result?
Poor insulation lets more heat move through walls and windows, so the calculator raises the load by 15 percent, while good insulation lowers it by 10 percent. A sunny, south facing room gains solar heat and adds 10 percent, while a shaded or north facing room subtracts 10 percent. These multipliers stack with the area baseline and ceiling factor to estimate the real cooling load.
Is bigger always better when sizing a mini-split?
No. An oversized mini-split short cycles, which means it cools quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air.
