Frequently Asked Questions about the Keyword Density Checker
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a term appears relative to the total number of words on a page, written as a percentage. The formula is occurrences divided by total words, times 100. For example, a keyword used 5 times in a 500 word article has a density of 1 percent.
What is a good keyword density?
There is no official target, but a natural range of roughly 0.5 to 2.5 percent for your main keyword works well for most pages. This checker flags single words above 3 percent because that level often reads as repetitive and signals keyword stuffing. Write for readers first, then check that nothing is overused.
How are two and three word phrases counted?
The tool slides a window across your words and counts every consecutive 2 word and 3 word combination, then divides each phrase's count by the total word count for its density. This surfaces repeated phrases like a product name or a target long tail keyword that single word counts would miss.
Why are words like "the" and "and" missing from the single word list?
Common stop words such as the, and, of, and to are excluded from the single word ranking so the list highlights meaningful terms instead of filler. Phrases keep stop words intact, because a phrase like "the best running shoes" is a real keyword target even though it starts with a stop word.
Does high keyword density help my rankings?
No. Modern search engines do not reward a specific density number, and stuffing a keyword can hurt readability and trigger spam signals. Use density as a quick check for accidental over-optimization, not as a target to hit. Coverage, relevance, and natural language matter far more.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript, so the text you paste never leaves your device or reaches a server. You can safely check unpublished drafts and client content.
