Air Fryer Time Converter

Convert an oven recipe into the right air fryer temperature and time. Uses the 25 F / 25 % rule, flags shake and flip steps by food type, and warns when the temperature drops below the 300 F crisping window.

Most household units are 4 to 8 quarts. Range 2 to 10.

Batch cooking
A 6-quart basket fits roughly 1 lb of single-layer food. For 1+ lb, cook in batches and reheat the first batch for 2 minutes at the end.

Frozen french fries tip

Shake the basket every 5 minutes and skip preheating; frozen fries crisp best from a cold start.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Air Fryer Time Converter

What is the rule of thumb for converting an oven recipe to an air fryer?
A common starting point is 25 F lower and about 25 percent less time. Appliance power, basket load, food thickness, and starting temperature can change the result. Check early and use a food thermometer where safe internal temperature matters.
Why does the air fryer cook faster than a conventional oven?
An air fryer circulates hot air in a compact chamber, which often heats and browns food faster than a conventional oven. The conversion is only a starting estimate and does not guarantee the same internal doneness. Check the food and use a thermometer when appropriate.
Why does the calculator recommend flipping food halfway through?
Air fryers cook from above more aggressively than from below because the heating element and the fan both sit at the top of the chamber. For thicker single-layer foods like chicken wings, fish fillets, and frozen french fries, the side facing up browns 30 to 50 percent faster than the side touching the basket. Flipping at the halfway mark evens out the color and the crisp on both sides. Loose foods like cut vegetables and shoestring fries can be shaken instead of flipped, which tumbles them and exposes new surfaces.
How much food fits in an air fryer at once?
A standard 6-quart air fryer holds roughly 1 pound of food in a single layer, which is the layout you want for proper crisping. Stacking or overfilling traps moisture and steams the food instead of frying it, so anything over about 1 pound should be cooked in two or three batches. The calculator scales this estimate to your basket size: a compact 3-quart basket handles about a half pound, while an 8 or 10 quart unit fits closer to 1.5 to 1.7 pounds in one layer. Reheat the first batch for 2 minutes at the end to bring everything to the same temperature before serving.
What is the ideal air fryer temperature for crispy results?
Most foods crisp best between 350 F and 400 F. At 300 F or lower, surface moisture does not flash off fast enough to develop a crunchy crust, so the food ends up steamed and pale. At 425 F or higher, the outside can burn before a thick piece is cooked through. The 300 to 400 F band is also where the Maillard browning reaction runs efficiently without scorching. If your converted temperature drops below 300 F (for example, an oven recipe at 300 F minus 25 F leaves you at 275 F), the calculator flags it and recommends bumping the heat back up and shortening the time instead.
