What does the FRAX fracture risk calculator estimate?
It produces an unofficial 10-year estimate for major osteoporotic fracture and hip fracture from age, sex, BMI, and selected risk factors. A femoral-neck T-score changes the simplified result but does not turn it into an official FRAX calculation.
How is the 10-year risk calculated here?
This tool starts from published baseline 10-year fracture probabilities for each age and sex (from the FRAX UK reference cohort), then multiplies that baseline by a published relative risk for each clinical risk factor you check. When you supply a T-score, it applies the bone density gradient of risk, about 1.5 per standard deviation for major fractures and 2.6 per standard deviation for hip fractures. Without a T-score, your BMI is used as a rough stand-in for bone strength.
Why does my result differ from the official FRAX tool?
This is an unofficial simplified model that multiplies published baseline values and relative risks. It can differ materially from the validated country-specific FRAX calculation, especially when several risk factors interact. Do not interpret numerical proximity as guaranteed; use the official tool with a clinician for an assessment.
What is a major osteoporotic fracture versus a hip fracture?
A major osteoporotic fracture means a clinical fracture of the hip, spine, forearm, or upper arm, the sites most linked to fragility. A hip fracture is one specific and serious type of major osteoporotic fracture, so the calculator reports it separately. The hip number is always equal to or lower than the major osteoporotic number, since hip fractures are a subset of that group.
What counts as high risk, and what should I do about it?

Clinical thresholds depend on a validated country-specific assessment, bone density, fracture history, guidelines, and individual risks.
