How is an Ethereum gas fee calculated?
The fee equals the gas limit (the number of gas units your transaction uses) multiplied by the gas price per unit. Gas prices are quoted in gwei, where 1 gwei is one billionth of an ether (10^9 wei). So a 21,000 gas transfer at 20 gwei costs 21,000 times 20, or 420,000 gwei, which is 0.00042 ETH. Multiply that ETH amount by the current ETH price to get the cost in dollars.
What is gwei, and how does it relate to wei and ETH?
Gwei (gigawei) is the denomination normally used to quote gas prices. One gwei equals 1,000,000,000 wei (10^9) and one billionth of an ether, while one ether equals 10^18 wei or 10^9 gwei. This calculator shows your fee in gwei, wei, and ETH at once so you can read it in whichever unit you need.
What gas limit should I use?
A standard ETH transfer always uses exactly 21,000 gas. Token transfers, swaps, and NFT mints run more code and use more, often anywhere from 45,000 to 250,000 gas or higher. The presets give typical figures, but the real gas used depends on the contract you call. You only pay for the gas your transaction actually consumes, up to the limit you set.
What is EIP-1559 and the base fee?
Since the London upgrade in August 2021, every block has a base fee that is burned, plus an optional priority fee (a tip that goes to the validator). Your effective gas price is the base fee plus the priority fee. Enter that combined figure in the gas price field, because the total fee is always the gas used multiplied by the effective gas price.
Why is my actual fee different from this estimate?
Gas prices change every block as network demand shifts, and the gas your transaction uses can be lower than the limit you set.
