Compute cost is the hourly rate multiplied by the number of instances and the hours each runs per month, and storage cost is your provisioned EBS in GB multiplied by the EBS price per GB-month. The two add up to a monthly total, which is multiplied by 12 for the annual figure. For example, two instances at $0.096 per hour running 730 hours, plus 100 GB of EBS at $0.08, comes to $148.16 per month.

AWS prices full-time usage at 730 hours per month, which is 8,760 hours per year divided by 12. It is an averaging convention so every month costs the same regardless of whether it has 28, 30, or 31 days. A 24/7 instance therefore bills for 730 hours, while an instance you stop at night or on weekends bills for fewer. Set the run time to Custom hours to enter your own figure up to 744.

Look up the On-Demand price for your exact instance type and AWS region on the EC2 pricing page, since rates differ by region and family. As a reference, an m5.large in us-east-1 is about $0.096 per hour and a t3.micro is around $0.0104. Use the Linux on-demand rate unless you run Windows or another licensed OS, which carries a higher per-hour price.

EBS (Elastic Block Store) is the persistent disk attached to your instance, billed per provisioned GB-month, not per GB used. The default here is $0.08 per GB-month, the gp3 rate in us-east-1. You pay for the full volume size you allocate even when the instance is stopped, so EBS often dominates the cost of part-time instances. Enter the total volume size across all your instances.

It covers On-Demand compute and EBS storage only. It does not include data transfer out of AWS, EBS IOPS or throughput surcharges on io2 and gp3, snapshots, Elastic IPs, load balancers, or other services. It also assumes list pricing, so it ignores Reserved Instance and Savings Plan discounts (which can cut compute by 30 to 70 percent), Spot pricing, the Free Tier, and taxes.
