Frequently Asked Questions about the DPI Calculator (Pixel Density)
What is DPI and how is it different from PPI?
DPI (dots per inch) is a print term for ink dots on paper. PPI (pixels per inch) is the screen equivalent. For digital displays the two are used interchangeably, since one pixel produces one visible dot.
What DPI counts as a Retina or high-density display?
Roughly 200 PPI and up for laptops and tablets, 300+ for phones. At those densities individual pixels are invisible at normal viewing distance, which is the threshold Apple originally marketed as Retina.
Why does my 4K monitor look the same as my 1080p one?
Diagonal size matters as much as resolution. A 27-inch 4K monitor is about 163 PPI, while a 27-inch 1080p panel is only 82 PPI. Move to a 15-inch 4K laptop and you get 294 PPI.
What DPI do I need for printing?
300 DPI is the standard for photo prints and magazines. 150 DPI works for posters viewed from a distance. Billboards run as low as 30 DPI since viewers stand far away.
How do I find my monitor's diagonal in inches?
Check the spec sheet or the model number (a Dell U2723 is 27 inches). You can also measure corner to corner across the visible panel with a tape measure.
