Frequently Asked Questions about the Character Counter

How many characters and words should an essay have?
A standard 500 word essay is roughly 2,500 to 3,000 characters. A 1,000 word essay is roughly 5,000 to 6,000. Most schools and editors count words, not characters, so use the word count for assignments.
What is the character limit on Twitter or X?
A standard X post is capped at 280 characters (counting spaces). X Premium users can post up to 25,000. The counter shows characters with spaces, which matches X's count exactly.
How does the reading time get calculated?
Reading time uses 200 words per minute, the average for adults reading silently. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations, podcasts, or voiceover scripts.
How are sentences and paragraphs counted?
Sentences split on period, exclamation, and question marks. Paragraphs split on blank lines (two or more line breaks). Single line breaks count as new lines, not new paragraphs.
Does my text get sent anywhere?
No. All counting runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored.
