Dog Age Calculator
Convert dog years to human years using the size-adjusted AKC chart, the UC Davis epigenetic formula, and the old multiply-by-7 rule for comparison.
Your dog
Human age (AKC, size-adjusted)
29.0 human years
This is the recommended estimate. It accounts for breed size, which matters because small dogs live noticeably longer than giant breeds.
Epigenetic clock (UC Davis, 2019)
48.6 human years
Formula: 16 * ln(dogAge) + 31. Based on DNA methylation in Labradors.
Old "multiply by 7" rule
21.0 human years
Folk rule from the 1950s. Largely inaccurate, shown here for comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Dog Age Calculator
Why is the old multiply-by-seven rule wrong?
It assumes dogs and humans age at a constant ratio, but they do not. Dogs mature very fast in the first two years (a one-year-old dog is roughly a 15-year-old human) and then slow down. The 7x rule overstates the age of young dogs and understates the age of older ones, especially for small breeds.
Does breed or size really change a dog's age?
Yes, a lot. Small breeds (under 20 lb) often reach 14-16 years, while giant breeds (over 90 lb) such as Great Danes typically live only 7-10 years. After the first two years, each calendar year roughly equals 4 human years for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7 for giant breeds.
What is the UC Davis epigenetic formula?
Researchers at UC Davis (Wang et al., 2019) measured DNA methylation in Labrador Retrievers and found that human age ~ 16 * ln(dog age) + 31. It matches the rapid early aging of dogs and slower later aging. It is only valid from about one year of age onward and was calibrated on a single breed, so it is an estimate.
What is the oldest dog ever recorded?
Bluey, an Australian Cattle Dog, lived 29 years and 5 months (1910-1939) and held the verified Guinness record for decades. Bobi, a Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo who died in 2023, was reported at 31 years but the record was later suspended pending review. Either way, dogs over 25 are extremely rare.
What life stage is my dog in?
Vets usually group dogs into puppy (0-1 year), young adult (1-3 years), mature adult (3-6 or 3-9 depending on size), senior (the last quarter of expected lifespan), and geriatric (past expected lifespan). Smaller breeds enter senior status later, often around 10-11, while giant breeds may be senior by 6-7.
